Maukuratawhai - Hanmer 9th May 2010
Five members of the club- Stephen Sheen, Neil Helson, Neil Climo, Ken Wooldridge and Ian Fussell (scribe) met up at Hanmer on Sunday for the trip to Maukuratawhai which is over Jacks Pass and on the other side of the Clarence river. The weather for the trip was superb.
(Ken and I had had an enjoyable day on Saturday exploring the Mountain bike tracks around Hanmer forest in balmy autumn weather with the colours of the leaves still stunning.)
We did Maukuratawhai in an anticlockwise direction, which is probably the better way to go, crossing the shallow Clarence river (which some of us elected to take our boots off so to have dry feet for the trip) A good steady climb but having to drop down in places before reaching our highest point ( Maukuratawhai 1615m).
We were rewarded with magnificent views towards Jacks and Jollies pass and beyond Hanmer, Molesworth, Clarence valley up to Lake Tennyson and out to the Kaikoura's.
The drop off the tops looking down towards our parked cars in the distance was steady going and it was noted that a considerable number of Wilding pines & Larch are taking hold in this area.
Crossing the Clarence again with signs of Didymo evident was disappointing to see.
A great day and worthwhile trip for the future, thanks to the enjoyable company.
