Russell Ramsden organised this tramp and then had to withdraw because of a dreaded lurgy that he caught. Luckily Russ Kiddey stepped in to lead the tramp – helped by Stu McHugh who provided very detailed information as none of the participants had been to Carrington Hut before.

We followed the Waimakariri river bed from the Klondyke Corner car part to the Anti Crow Hut and found the track closer towards Carrington hut.

Once at the hut we dropped our gear and wandered up the White River as we had been told that there was a spectacular waterfall just beyond the Clough cableway. Unfortunately it was further than expected and we had to turn back before it got too dark. We had the hut to ourselves.

When returning we stayed on the track after the Anti Crow hut and bashed and crashed down to the river from the top of the Turkey Flat fan. This was quicker and a lot easier than following the river down from the hut. Once we reached the car park and looked back we realised that it would have been easier to continue on the tack until reaching a dry rock filled water course that runs down to the river.

Trip participants: Russ Kiddey (leader), Alison McKechie, Sue Brechin, Gerald Edmunds
