Old Ghost Road 12 – 17 February 2019
Here’s how it was - at the front we had our leader, Paul ‘well organised and knowledgeable’ Knox.  At the back we had Prue ‘watching our backs’ Taylor and then in an ever-changing order came   David Jones, Ben Heese, Ross McGerty, Peter Moody, John Horgan, Anne Quinn, Sue Ryan and  Karyn Brookes (acting, unpaid camp mother.)

HIT – the damp green bush, friendly robins, take 5’s, composting toilets, comfortable huts, sun in the right places, cell phone reception on the tussock tops of the Lyell Range,  a mother Weka and her chicks, the stunning position of Ghost Lake Hut, bucket showers, Quiddler, photo stops, amazing bush clad valleys, cheerful fantails, the Skyline Ridge with those steps, the Boneyard, the podocarp forest of the Mokihinui River, a surprised goat on the track,  swing bridges, the interesting people we met on the way, the laughs and group conversations, waterfalls, the dramatic gorge at Specimen Point, the track history, lighter packs, hot showers at the Lazy Seal Cottages, turbot at Cape Foulwind pub, breakfast at Berlins, good drivers.

MISS – sandflies, dehydrated food, some gas igniters not working correctly, helicopters coming in on our walk out (a few only, but let’s keep it that way), the carpenter sawing and banging at Ghost Lake Hut (necessary but bad timing)

Recommendation – if you haven’t tramped or biked the Old Ghost Road – do it!

Thank you team for a great six days.
