Sisters carpark to Hope Kiwi Lodge

18 & 19 August 2019

The original trip was meant to start at Windy Point on the Lewis Pass highway. As there has been a problem with cars being broken into or stolen at carparks on that stretch of road it was decided to start from the Sister carpark at the Lake Sumner end.

This made for a much more interesting tramp with a mixture of landscapes to walk through: tussock/matagouri, beaches on Lake Sumner, Lake Marion, rough sidle tracks and beech forest. The eight hour tramps each day were mostly on level ground with several climbs to keep it all interesting. Information on the internet indicated that the sidle tracks around bluffs on Lake Sumner would be hard to find, but they now have prominent markers.

The conditions were perfect although it was rather cool overnight and on Monday morning. Monday was just stunning with clear blue sky and the surrounding peaks covered in snow.

Kaye did a great job as tramp leader for most of the tramp.

One lesson from the tramp was not to forget your sleeping bag! One person had to turn back from near Amberley to get their sleeping bag. They then tramped in to the hut on their own.

Participants: Pete Coursey, Gerald Edmunds, Ben Heese, Russ Kiddey, Russell Ramsden, Tim Slack, Brent Stanley, Kaye Young (co-leader).
