Broken Hill Trip 11th October 2009

A combined group of 15 members did a round trip to Broken Hill on the Flock Hill station. The trip nearly didn’t go ahead due to snow conditions but the enthusiastic group was keen to give it a go when alternatives were discussed prior to departing Yaldhurst.

The trip route was unknown to most but we had one member with us who had done it before and with his knowledge of the route along with a course in my trusty GPS we managed OK.

From the car park at the road entrance to the Broken River ski field we set off through the thick wilding pines (managing to pull some seedlings on the way) up onto the ridge leading to Broken Hill peak (1487m). The snow conditions varied from little to knee deep in places. A cool westerly wind greeted us on the tops but the fantastic views of the Craigieburn and Torlesse ranges and the Winding Creek basin made up for this.

The return route took us down a ridge and through some beech forest and finally back onto the farm track to the cars. We missed the turn off on the Narnia track, which resulted in some more cross-country tramping. Thanks to all the members for their input and good spirits on the day. (and no, we didn’t see PK in the Piper Cub spying on us from aloft!)
